What is a Magistrates Court?
The Magistrates Court is the court where all criminal matters involving adults commence. It is also the court that hears summary criminal matters including traffic offences, and domestic violence order applications. While the Magistrates Court deals with criminal matters where the accused is aged 18 or older, the Moorabbin Justice Centre also deals with criminal matters where the accused is under 18 as well as hearing child protection and adoption matters on certain days.

If you have a matter in the Moorabbin Justice Centre, make sure you arrive at court well before the time your matter is listed to be heard. You should be neatly and conservatively dressed, and you should come prepared to be at court for most of the day.

Initial Steps Upon Reaching Moorabbin Justice Centre
When you arrive at the Moorabbin Justice Centre, you will need to pass through security, and this will usually require that you remove any items from your pocket and place them in a tray to be scanned through by security. Once you pass through security, you will need to approach the registry, which is located at the bottom floor, and make known that you are in appearance at Court. If you are represented on the day, your solicitor will usually advise the Court registry of your appearance on your behalf.
If you are not represented, the Registrar at Court will advise you which court room your matter will be heard in by searching the list, and then you will be required to go up the stairs to the Court room.
